What is legal tread depth on tyres?

The legal limit for minimum depth of the tread on your tyres is 1.6 millimetres, across the central ¾ of the tread around the complete circumference of the tyre. UK law requires that your vehicle is fitted with the correct type and size of tyre for the vehicle type you are driving and for the purpose it is being used. This means fitting the right tyres and for safety ensuring that they are inflated to the manufacturer's recommended pressure.

For safety reasons it is recommended that you replace your tyres before the legal limit is reached. Many vehicle manufacturers recommend replacing at 3 millimetres. To see the impact on braking distance of different tyre tread depth.. At 1.6 millimetres in wet weather it takes an extra car length (8 metres) to stop at 50 mph than if your tread was 3 millimetres.

A regular check of your tyres can help you to avoid 3 penalty points and £2,500 in fines (per tyre) for having tyres worn beyond the legal minimum limit on your vehicle.

It is also a legal requirement to ensure that tyres of different construction types are not fitted to opposite sides of the same axle. The two main tyre types are radial and cross-ply, and these must not be mixed on the same axle.

Mixing brands and patterns of the same construction type is permissible depending on the vehicle type and manufacturers recommendation. Check your vehicle's handbook for tyre fitment details and options or ask Kwik Fit to look this up for you.

Why does my car need a winter check?

We all need an extra layer or two of protection in winter. Including your car. That’s why our Winter Health Check has been designed to provide that extra care. Beginning with an Express Visual Health Check to highlight any obvious or potential problems. We’ll also top up your oil and washer fluids, check your battery and alternator and fit for free any necessary bulbs and wiper blades.

Included in the £25 price is a Winter Car Care Kit with a screenwash, de-icer, cockpit care, ice scraper and cleaning cloth. (This pack alone would normally retail for £20.) We’re also giving our offer an extra boost with a £20 voucher towards your next fitted battery, until 31st March 2015 when purchasing a Winter Health Check. All of which, we trust, will make the prospect of winter a lot less chilling than usual.

What happens if my vehicle fails it's MOT?

Should the vehicle fail, you will be issued with a VT3O Certificate stating the items causing the failure of the MOT test. Make sure that you are clear as to what rectification is required for a pass to be issued. In certain cases expert or special services may be required regarding emissions or welding.

There is no set time limit before a retest and it is at the discretion of the individual. Remember - a car that does not have as current MOT Certificate is not allowed to be used on the road except when going for repairs for an MOT test, or to a prearranged MOT test.

How can I legally drive my car if my MOT test has expired?

You can't. You can only drive your car to and from the MOT station providing that you still have current road tax and insurance in place.

How frequently do I require a car service?

Ideally you would have your car serviced depending on what the manufacturer recommends.

A light has shown up on my car dashboard, what do I do?

First of all have a look in your car manufacturers' manual. If you cannot find the answer there you can bring it along to our garage and one or our technicians will plug your car into our vehicle diagnostic tool and figure out what is wrong.

My car has started making a strange noise, what do I do?

If the sound is very loud, then switch off the ignition and call a car recovery agency. If the sound is not too loud or it just does not sound 'right', then bring it along to our garage and we will have a look at it.
