An MoT involves checking most parts of your car, ensuring they meet the key legal requirements at the time of of the MoT test. Having your MoT Test at The Garage Sheffield will make sure:

  • The vehicle body and structure is free from excessive corrosion, or damage in specific vehicle areas, and there are no sharp edges likely to cause injury.
     
  • The vehicle's fuel system is leak-free and the fuel cap fastens properly with a functioning seal. When The Garage perform your vehicle's MoT Test, you'll need to give us the locking fuel cap key so we can check for this.
     
  • The vehicle's exhaust meets exhaust emissions legal requirements, which are dependant on the age and fuel type of the vehicle.
     
  • The exhaust system is complete, secure, without serious leaks and silences effectively.
     
  • Seat belts are checked for type, condition, security and ease of operation. All compulsory seat belts must be in place when the MoT Test is undertaken.
     
  • Car or van seats are secure. Front and rear backseats can be secured in the upright position.
     
  • Doors latch securely in the closed position. The front doors of a vehicle must open from inside and outside. Rear doors may need to be opened to gain access to testable items.
     
  • Vehicle Mirrors are in the correct place, in good condition and secure.
     
  • The boot or tailgate can be closed safely and securely.
     
  • Brakes are in good working condition and the operation and performance (efficiency test) is satisfactory. Note: removal of the road wheels is not part of the test.
     
  • Tyres and wheels are in good condition; secure, the correct size and type, and the tread depth is sufficient. Spare tyres are not inspected as part of your MoT Test.
     
  • Vehicle registration plates are in good condition and secure and that the characters are correctly formed and spaced.
     
  • The car's lights are in operational condition and secure. Headlamps are tested for position and aim.
     
  • The car or van bonnet securely latches in the closed position.
     
  • Wipers and washers operate effectively, giving the driver a clear view ahead of the road.
     
  • The vehicle windscreen is in good condition and the driver's view of the road is clear.
     
  • The horn operates correctly and is of a suitable type.
     
  • Steering and suspension are of satisfactory condition and operation.
     
  • The vehicle identification number (VIN) is on vehicles first used on or after 1 August 1980. Not more than one different VIN is displayed except on multi-stage build vehicles.
